Why UI/UX Matters (User Interface / User Experience)
What is UI and Its Design?
User Interface design is the process of making interfaces in
software or computerized devices with a focus on looks or style. What should be
the colour scheme, where should the icons go, and all such cosmetic questions
are what UI entails.
A UI Designer will broadly work on the presentation of the
app- the images, logos, icons, and links. Using the constraints set by the UX designer as guidelines, UI designers
decide on the look and feel of the app.
What is UX and its Design?
Cognitive scientist Don Norman is credited with coining the
term, “user experience” back in the early 1990’s when he worked at Apple and
defines it as follows,
"‘User experience’ encompasses all aspects of the
end-user’s interaction with the company, its services, and its products."
User Experience Design is a broader field or super-set of
the UI design in layman terms. A UX
designer has to visualize how the app is going to cater to the needs of the
user, typically answering questions like what will this button do? Will a tap
on the logo lead somewhere? How many taps/clicks are getting a task done? How
can that be minimized?
To understand what makes an experience a good one, Peter Moreville
developed a great visual to highlight what goes into effective UX design.
Why it matters?
UX is focused on the user’s journey to solve a problem, UI
is focused on how a product’s surfaces look and function, thus making the work
more cognitive. For example: try and memorize a random number 89112314901
Now, how many of us tried to remember it like 89-11-231….
or 891-231…. ?
As you can see, our brain tries to shorten the memory
footprint and instead of remembering each individual number, it remembers them
into shorter groups. What if we apply the same thing to a form design? Do you
think presenting a user with a long form to be filled in one go is a good idea?
Or is it better to fill data in smaller units starting with the data that is
most essential? A good UX professional will be able to identify and implement
such things.
Thus, it can be concluded that while the Web & Mobile App UX Designer will
be involved in the making of the app early on, the Web & Mobile App UI Designer’s task is more towards the later
stages of the app development process.
Making a successful app that is loved by the user is simply
not possible without a great UI and UX design. Best UI/UX developer may write the best code possible, but if the
app fails to answer the user’s needs and does not impress with its interface,
it will never be able to leave a mark. UI/ UX Design Services Company assure that they are able leave an impression
on the users concise encouraging them to use the web or app again.
The code communicates with the computer, but UI/UX are
elements that interact with humans. Since the app has to be used by humans,
coding is a part of app development and a major one at that, but it is not app
development itself.
Every application, no matter how advanced is created to be
used by humans and therefore it will only be judged UX/UI design first.
